Ring camera skipping motion… what’s going on?

I have a wired Ring camera set up in front of the garage, but I’ve noticed it keeps skipping some motion events. For example, it caught my wife and kids pulling out of the garage, but when I left for work half an hour later, it didn’t detect anything. On the flip side, at night, it catches every little thing, like headlights from passing cars or spider webs blowing in front of the camera, and I get non-stop alerts.

Is there a way to fix this? Or am I missing a setting? I’m on the Pro Plan, but I’m thinking of canceling it since it only saved me $2 a year on my home insurance.

What you’re seeing is pretty typical. These cameras aren’t going to catch everything 100% of the time. You can try disabling Smart Alerts and person detection, and stick to using just one motion zone for better results.

I don’t have any of those settings turned on, and I already use just one motion zone. It’s like the Ring skips around 30% of what happens. Is this just how security cameras work?

Try using a Ring wedge or put something behind the top two screws of the doorbell to angle it downwards a bit. You might see better results that way.

My camera is mounted under a motion-detecting light at the upper right corner of the garage. It’s angled so I can see the entire garage door opening and closing. There’s no way a car can get out fast enough for the camera not to catch it.

What model do you have? I’ve got the same issue. My Ring doesn’t pick up cars either.

I have the battery-powered Doorbell Plus, and it barely records anything. I’m thinking of returning it and getting a Blink instead. This is my second one in a week. My old Ring 2 used to catch everything. It’s frustrating.

Does your wife drive faster in and out of the garage than you do? I’ve noticed that faster motion triggers my cameras better, both inside and outside. Also, check your motion sensitivity settings under ‘Motion Settings,’ and double-check your motion zones. It’s possible your wife’s car is inside the zone, but yours isn’t.
